Antoine Davis of the Detroit Mercy is now #2 on the NCAA scoring list

And then there was one.

With 5:33 to play in the first half of his team’s game against IUPUI on Saturday, the Detroit Star Mercy Antoine Davis He passed Freeman Williams, a former Portland State star, to become the No. 2 all-time scorer in Division I men’s college basketball history with 3,250 points and 18 of the game.

Davis finished with a game-high 42 points in the Titans’ 89-77 win over IUPUI and now sits at 3,274 points.

He’ll now run at “Pistol” Pete Maravich, who holds the DI record with 3,667 points in his three years at LSU.

Davis, who plays for his father Mike Davis’ team, entered the transfer portal last season and considered transferring to another school. There were multiple major programs on his roster, including BYU and Maryland, but the veteran said he returned to Detroit Mercy to help the school make it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in over a decade.

Davis never played in the NCAA tournament, and said he would trade any record for an appearance.

But now, the focus will be on a quest that once seemed impossible.

Maravich averaged 44.2 points per game for three years at LSU in the late 1960s. He did it without the 3-point line.

Davis has been chasing Maravich in a career that began with the 2018-2019 season. He has played in 131 matches, compared to 83 for Maravich. But Maravich also averaged 38.1 field goal attempts per game in his career compared to Davies’ 20.5.

After climbing to second place on Saturday, Davis still needs a miracle finish to get close to Maravich’s mark.

To achieve this feat in the regular season, Davis had to average over 38 points to score nearly 400 points and pass Maravich. Even with a Horizon League post-season run and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, Davis would need a heroic effort to pull it off.

And he appeared to be equally recognized when he broke the NCAA record for three-pointers made in an 87-75 win last week over Robert Morris.

“It’s a hard record to break, even for me,” he said.
