One person died after falling from the stadium bleachers during Ohio State University’s graduation ceremony on Sunday.
At about 12:30 p.m., an officer called for help over the Ohio State University police radio, according to the Columbus Dispatch: “I need paramedics and some officers at Gate 30.” [of Ohio Stadium]…Someone fell off the field.”
Paramedics declared the person dead at 12:25 p.m. WSBN TV mentioned.
It is unclear whether the person whose name was not mentioned was a student at the university or what prompted him to fall several stories to his death.
“One person fell from the stands. They are dead,” Ohio State University spokesman Ben Johnson told the outlet. “We have no additional details to share at this time. Police and emergency responders are at the scene. “For anyone affected by today’s incident, we will provide counseling and other support resources.”
A witness told the outlet that the person fell while the last graduates were passing through the area, and that some students were visibly upset in the aftermath.
The party, which began at noon, continued without interruption. Speakers initially did not mention the incident.
When the students left the party, they reportedly walked near the area where the body fell, which was still cordoned off with yellow police tape.
Ohio State University did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
