Cleveland – No one has seen the first half of the season like this Ronald Acuna Jr
A four-time Atlanta All-Star made history Monday night when he became the first player to hit 20 home runs, 40 stolen bases and 50 RBIs before the All-Star break.
“Special player,” said Braves coach Brian Snicker after Atlanta extended their winning streak to nine games and a 30-game lead above .500 by defeating the Cleveland Guardians 4-2.
The 25-year-old Acuna is also just the third player to hit 20 homers and steal 40 bases in his first 84 games, joining Ricky Henderson (1990) and Eric Davis (1986).
Prior to the game, Acuna was named the NL Player of the Month for June, the second time he had won the award this season.
In the third inning, Acuna extended his hitting streak to 14 games before hitting his 40th base hit, his most in a season. 37 steals in 2019.
Acuna appeared to hit his right shoulder as he made his head-first slide. He stayed on the ground for a few moments before being helped to his feet and checked by the Braves coach. Acuna stayed in the game and scored moments later on one.
Snicker said Acuna “stung a bit” but felt fine.
There doesn’t seem to be anything the speedy Acuna can’t do.
“You go out and have a drink or go to the bathroom, you might miss something you’ve never seen before,” Snicker said. “I am happy to have him in our team and to be able to watch him every day.”
“Beer enthusiast. Subtly charming alcohol junkie. Wannabe internet buff. Typical pop culture lover.”
