Modi calls Putin days after Kyiv visit, one day after Biden

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call on Tuesday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, without providing immediate details.

In a post on Twitter, Modi said the two men “exchanged views on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and my insights from the recent visit to Ukraine.”

He also said that he “reaffirmed India’s firm commitment to support an early, durable and peaceful resolution of the conflict.”

The Indian prime minister also discussed his visit to Kyiv with US President Joe Biden on Monday.

Modi is one of the most prominent leaders from a country that has maintained a neutral stance on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, having visited Kyiv – and his regional tour and repeated calls for talks have sparked speculation about whether he has coordinated with any other countries on the issue.

Modi also said on Twitter that he spoke to Biden about “India’s full support for the speedy return of peace and stability” in Ukraine among other issues.

The White House said Biden praised Modi’s cooperation with Ukraine and his visit last week to Poland, one of Ukraine’s closest allies in Eastern Europe.

“We welcome any other country that wants to help the president.” [Volodymyr] “We call on President Zelensky to work toward this just peace, and any nation willing to engage in this discussion starts with President Zelensky’s point of view, by listening to him,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

The visit to Kiev comes after Modi’s visit to Moscow last month when he met Putin, a trip that Zelensky strongly criticized.
