Mike Lynch’s Yacht Sinking Latest News: The Bayesian captain will be questioned again by prosecutors in manslaughter investigation

A lawyer who died after his yacht sank off the coast of Sicily wrote a poignant post on LinkedIn two months before he joined the ill-fated voyage.

In one of his few posts on the site, Christopher Morvillo, 59, thanked his legal team after they helped British tech mogul Mike Lynch win a fraud trial and discussed living “happily ever after.”

Officials said the luxury yacht was hit by a violent storm, and Italian officials said they would look into how it affected one vessel and not other nearby vessels, according to a translation of the conference.

Rollo Igno also described the “beautiful memory of the soul” in Mr. Lynch’s daughter, Hannah.

Mr. Igno said he had the “privilege” of spending “almost every waking moment” with Mr. Lynch while he was in custody in San Francisco, describing the details as unlike anything he had ever worked on and as “life-changing.”

“As an executive protection agent, the first rule is simple: Never get close to the boss,” he said.

“They are not your friends, they are clients and the relationship is strictly professional. But with Mike, that was not acceptable to him and to me, and that rule quickly faded.”

Autonomy, the software company sold by Mike Lynch in an £8.64bn deal in 2011, pioneered business data analytics, using machine learning and what Mr Lynch called “adaptive pattern recognition”.

The company used a statistical method called Bayesian inference at the heart of its software, which was invented by the 18th-century mathematician Thomas Bayes.

Yacht name Bayesianreferring to the same model that was at the heart of Autonomy’s success — and Mr. Lynch’s.

Mike Lynch and his wife Angela Bakaris, once dubbed the “Britain’s Bill Gates”, were worth an estimated £852m in 2023, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

The 59-year-old tech mogul is best known for founding Invoke Capital and Autonomy Corporation and was in the headlines after being acquitted of charges in a high-profile fraud case.

There are currently 12,626 superyachts on the water around the world, with 1,166 under construction or on order. If you’ve been to a Greek island this year, or perhaps the Amalfi Coast, you’ve probably spotted them cruising in and out of port and wondered who owns such a yacht. Or who can afford to charter one – which averages around £180,000 a week.

While you might think of high-profile influencers and A-list celebrities, the superyacht community is where the millionaires are sorted from the billionaires from the billionaires; 0.001 per position. It’s rare to find a celebrity with the financial clout to buy a Lynch-owned yacht, as these are generally industry titans who aren’t as well-known or household names.

Ricaldo Tomas was the superyacht’s chef and the first person confirmed dead.

The Italian coast guard found the Canadian citizen of Antigua origin near the sunken boat. A friend of Mr. Thomas, who asked not to be identified, said the yachting community was mourning his death.

She said The Independent: “He was a unique human being. Incredibly talented, his smile and laugh were infectious, his voice was amazing and his love for the ocean and the moon was deep. I talked to him almost every day. He loved his life, his friends and his work.”

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealand citizen who was the captain of the Baysian, is being investigated for manslaughter and causing the ship to sink, said lawyer Aldo Mordiglia, one of the lawyers appointed to defend the captain.

Mordiglia said Mr. Catfield, who has already been questioned, will be questioned again by prosecutors on Tuesday.

Under Italian law, being investigated does not mean a person is guilty, nor does it necessarily lead to criminal charges.

Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio confirmed on Saturday that the investigation had begun and that his team would look at every possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, the individuals responsible for supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.
