Jordan Montgomery Claims Scott Boras ‘Murdered’ His Free Agency

Jordan Montgomery has criticized his former agent Scott Boras for his disastrous free agency at the end of last season.

The Diamondbacks lefty was reportedly interested in signing with the pitching-starved Red Sox over the winter, but instead signed a one-year, $25 million deal before Opening Day to head to Arizona.

“I had a Zoom call with the Red Sox, that’s all I really know. It went well.” Montgomery said, according to the Boston Herald:“I don’t know, obviously Boras messed it up a little bit, so I’m just trying to move on in the postseason and forget about it.”

A few weeks after signing with the Diamondbacks, Montgomery parted ways with Boras and moved to Wasserman, a rival baseball agency.

Montgomery was one of four Boras clients — along with Blake Snell, Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger — who signed late in the season.

He was expected to build on one of his best seasons in 2023, posting a 3.20 ERA in 32 games during the regular season before dominating the postseason (2.90 ERA, 31 innings) for the World Series-winning Rangers.

The 2024 season was a miserable one in the desert for the 31-year-old lefty.

Montgomery had a 6.44 ERA in 19 games, prompting the Diamondbacks to move him to the relief bullpen on Friday to give right-handed pitcher Ryan Nelson a spot in the starting lineup.

He also didn’t make his debut until April 19 after missing spring training and a month with knee inflammation.

Montgomery has a $22.5 million vesting option.

If he makes four more starts, bringing his total to 23 starts, he will earn $25 million.
