Perhaps against the wishes of Apple’s AI chief, John Giannandrea, Apple and OpenAI have reportedly reached an agreement that will bring ChatGPT to iOS 18 and other operating systems in 2024.
Apple and OpenAI could bring ChatGPT functionality to Siri
Apple wants to bring AI to its platforms, but it has focused on privacy-preserving on-device models, not the large language models (LLMs) used by its competitors. Therefore, the company was seeking to partner with Google or Microsoft to bring its LLM degrees to the iPhone.
according to a report, a deal has finally been struck between OpenAI and Apple. Details of the deal are unknown, but it likely means that the technologies used in ChatGPT can be accessed by Apple users, specifically through Siri.
The deal with OpenAI does not close options with other players in the AI industry. One rumor suggested that Apple was looking to create an AI App Store, so OpenAI could be one of many companies operating such a store.
Internal politics are a likely driver of this settlement, with the report noting that John Giannandrea, Apple’s senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy, said in an email in 2023 that “the last thing people need is another chatbot.” So, either Apple didn’t care about server-side LLM or they started too late and aren’t ready.
Whatever the case, if this report is true, Apple likely won’t announce an Apple-made LLM to replace Siri. Instead, you’ll use server-side products like ChatGPT to answer user questions.
For example, today if you ask Siri something that requires searching, Siri will send a search query to Google using an anonymous ID. OpenAI could have a similar option for users where queries that require AI pass information to ChatGPT in a privacy-preserving way and return a useful answer that Siri reads.
