BOSTON — The benches at Fenway Park emptied Sunday after an apparent dispute between Boston Red Sox outfielder Chris Martin and Milwaukee Brewers first base coach Quentin Perry.
Martin ran to first to cover Christian Yelich’s final bunt in the seventh inning. As he walked towards his own hideout, Perry seemed to say something to Martin.
Martin turned before first base umpire Ryan Addyton stood in front of him as players streamed out of the dugouts and bullpen.
No punches were thrown and both teams walked off the field. There were no evictions.
“I think their pitcher showed some emotion and I think our staff thought it was directed at them,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “I don’t know if that’s the case or not. I’m not going to speculate on what the kid was doing. But if you were staring at someone and saying that, it might be interpreted as ‘we’re telling them.’
Martin said he was upset that the brewers were trying to hit too hard.
“I probably said some things under my breath,” he said. “That was kind of directed at that half. I’ll let you all decide what those things are. The heat of the moment. They attacked twice. You see, they attacked there at the end of the game. I didn’t like that. I know that’s part of the game… I let them know that in This league.
