All By Myself songwriter Eric Carmen dies at 74

Singer-songwriter Eric Carmen, known for his hit song All By Myself, has died at the age of 74, his wife announced.

The American star rose to fame with powerhouse pop group The Raspberries before establishing himself as a solo artist.

One of his huge singles, “Hungry Eyes,” was featured in the 1987 classic film Dirty Dancing.

“It brought him great joy to know that his music over the decades has touched so many and will be his lasting legacy.”

She ended the statement by quoting “Love is all that matters… faithful and forever” from his 1977 solo album Boats Against the Tide.

The Ohio-born singer co-founded the band Raspberry in the early 1970s alongside Jim Bonfanti and Wally Bryson, who were later joined by Dave Smalley after the departure of John Alexik.

They released their debut album Raspberry in 1972, with songs hitting the charts including Go All The Way – which was later banned by the BBC in the UK due to sexually suggestive lyrics and was later included on the Guardians soundtrack Of The Galaxy 2014.

After four albums together, the band broke up in 1975 and Carmen began a solo career.

One of his most famous singles is All By Myself, which later became one of Canadian singer Celine Dion's most popular songs when she covered it.

The song is also featured in the opening scene of Bridget Jones's Diary.

As a songwriter, Carmen has had major hits, including “Almost Paradise from the Footloose,” as well as “Never Gonna Fall In Love Again” and “Make Me Lose Control.”
