Brian West, Taylor Swift correspondent for The Tennessean and USA TODAY Network, explains what Swifties can expect at the Grammy Awards.
Will Taylor Swift make history by becoming the first singer to win Album of the Year four times? Will you perform?
The “Midnights” artist was nominated for six Grammy Awards at Sunday's ceremony on CBS. Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Taylor Swift have each won Album of the Year three times. Sinatra was the first to win his awards in consecutive years, and Wonder won all three of his awards in four years.
Three engineers have won Album of the Year four times for their work on albums with Swift, Adele and Bruno Mars: Serban Genia, Jon Hanes and Tom Quinn. Swift thanked Richa in her acceptance speech when she won the “Folklore” award. He was nominated as part of the “Midnights” team so he could see his album's win total for the year rise to five if Swift wins.
Swift has won 12 Grammy Awards. She has been nominated 52 times, including six awards this year:
- “Anti-Hero”, pop solo performance, Taylor Swift
- “Karma”, a pop duo/group performance by Taylor Swift featuring Ice Spice
- “Anti-Hero” is song of the year by Jack Antonoff and Taylor Swift
- “Anti-Hero” is Taylor Swift's best recording of the year
- “Midnights” is an acoustic pop album by Taylor Swift
- “Midnights” is Taylor Swift's Album of the Year
Swift has performed at the Grammy Awards every year she's won Album of the Year, so fans will have to wait to see if she'll perform a song from “Midnights” or perhaps a song from “Speak Now (Taylor's Version)” or “1989 (Taylor's Version).” ” Revisit Swift's past acceptance speeches and offers below.
“Fearless,” “1989” and “Folklore” win album of the year
Swift is the only artist to win Album of the Year three times, for her second, fifth and eighth albums. Here are her acceptance letters:
2010 win “The Brave”.: “Thank you so much! This is the album of the year! Oh my God! Thank you so much. I just hope you know how much this means to me and to Nathan my producer and to all these musicians you see on this album.” On stage, we have to bring this back to Nashville . Our families are terrified in their living rooms. My dad and my little brother are losing their minds in the living room right now, and that's for my dad. Thank you all “Those times I said I can do what I want in life. And mom, you are my best friend. And that's the story, all of us, when we turn 80 and we're telling the same stories over and over again to our grandchildren and they're so upset from U.S. This is the story we will tell again and again. In 2010, we got the win for Album of the Year at the Grammys. Thank you!”
2016 win “1989”.“I want to thank the fans for the past 10 years and the Recording Academy for giving us this incredible honor. I want to thank all of my collaborators that you see on this stage. Mostly, I want to thank my co-executive producer.”, Max Martin, who deserved to Be here for 25 years. As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards twice, I want to say to all the young women out there, there will be people along the way who will try to undermine your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and don't let those people distract you, one day when you get where you're going, you'll look around and you'll know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you for this the moment.”
2021 “Folklore” wins.“Oh my God! I want to thank all my collaborators who are on stage. I want to thank Serban Ghanya. I want to thank Justin Vernon. I'm so excited to meet you one day. Joe, who is the first person I play every song I write, and I had the best time on Writing songs with you in quarantine. I want to thank James, Inez, Betty, and their parents, who are the second and third people I play on every new song I write. But mostly, we just want to thank the fans. You guys met us in this fantasy world we created “We can't tell you how proud we are of this forever. Thank you so much, and thank you to the Recording Academy, we will never forget that you did this for us. Thank you so much.”
Before Swift's speech, her close friend and co-producer Aaron Dessner said: “It's hard to believe that I'm standing here with one of the greatest songwriters alive who has somehow put their trust in me to collaborate in this crazy time we've all been living through.”
From 'Fearless' to 'Evermore': Swift's seven Grammy Awards performances
In 2021, Swift brought the “Folklore” shack to Los Angeles for a 5-and-a-half-minute mashup of “Cardigan,” “August,” and “Willow.” The camera opened with a tight shot of Swift's face enjoying the moonlight above the mossy ceiling. The stars danced in a projecting silhouette forest behind her as the camera panned from the roof to a cozy, inviting attic. It featured an instrumental interlude with two co-producers Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner until Swift appeared with a guitar and belted out “Salt air and rust at your door.” It ended with the first track of “Evermore”.
In 2016, Swift opened the Grammy Awards with “Out of the Woods.” Her live rendition of the pop song “1989” featured powerful vocals during the bridge when she murmured “20 stitches in a hospital room.” Swift wore a shiny pantsuit and sleek blonde hair. Mist filled the haunting forest dream theater. Co-producer Jack Antonoff played guitar alongside a live band while white lights danced to synth beats.
In 2014, before releasing the 10-minute version on “Red (Taylor's Version),” Swift played a 5-minute acoustic rendition of “All Too Well.” The intimate performance made headlines for Swift's seven head bangs interspersed with piano playing before the bridge. There's a moment at 3:56 when her eyes pierce the screen to an ex-lover of whom she sings: “But you keep my old scarf.” The 10-minute version won Best Music Video of 2023 but did not take home Song of the Year.
In 2013, Swift appeared in a white, red and black circus. The ringmaster donned a white outfit complete with a dazzling silver ensemble and top hat to sing “We're Never Getting Back Together.” Circus performers inspired by “Alice in Wonderland” wore fun checkerboard skirts and bunny ears as they danced around the “red” diva. During the bridge, Swift rolled her eyes and spoke in a British accent to mimic an earlier call to her to say, “I still love you.” Her response: “I'm sorry. I'm busy opening the Grammy Awards, and we'll never get back together. Like it always has.”
“One day, I'm going to sing this at the Grammys,” Swift sang in 2012. The country music star brought the “Speak Now” era to the stage, playing “Mean” on the 13th banjo. Her live band performs around her in a landscape obliterated by a hurricane. The unhinged parlor door, bare ladder, wooden bed frame and picket fence are some of the remains bolted together for a ramshackle backdrop.
In 2010, Ryan Seacrest introduced the young Swift at the Grammy Awards. Swift played a minute of “Today Was a Fairytale” before announcing the legend. “It's a surreal story and an honor to share the stage with Stevie Nicks.” The two performed Nicks' “Rhiannon” before transitioning into a slower, more folky version of “You Belong With Me.”
In 2009, Swift made her Grammy debut performing “Fifteen” from the movie “Fearless” with Miley Cyrus. The teen stars sat on chairs surrounded by fans. Swift wore a sheer white dress over a form-fitting black outfit. As she played her colorful guitar, she took the first verse. Cyrus belted out the top of the chorus, “Because you're 15 years old.” The two exchanged words back and forth throughout the heart-pounding performance that lasted nearly 4 minutes.
