Smoke rising from the Con Edison plant after the “explosion”

Black smoke was seen coming from a ConEd plant in Brooklyn as power outages were seen across New York City.

The power outage occurred just after midnight on Friday, and captured footage shows plumes spreading from the facility.

A temporary power outage across New York City was followed by flashing lights for a few seconds. Most of the electricity is back on.

The New York City Fire Department was quick to the scene and sirens were seen flashing from the ConEd plant on John Street in Dumbo.

While New York City Police Department officers stood outside the facility’s doors.

Con Edison said it is currently investigating the issue, and DailyMail.com has contacted the company for more information.

Residents across New York City complained of brief power outages with most left confused about the outage.

Several people claimed to have heard a “bang” from the power plant while others felt the rumble.

Some passengers were detained on the subway for about 20 minutes during the power outage without any announcements.

Flickering lights were reported in neighborhoods including Lower Manhattan, the Upper East Side, Bed-Stuy, Downtown Brooklyn, and Long Island City.

There were reports that the power went out twice within about 15 minutes.

“My mom and I were talking in the kitchen and the lights went out momentarily,” one X resident wrote.

“We both stared at each other wondering what the hell happened. Thanks for scaring the hell out of me and bringing Conad back.”

Another user wrote: “The lights just flashed, what’s going on in NYC?”

A third concerned person wrote: “So all of us in NYC suddenly had a power outage??”

Another added: “There was a power outage in NYC while I was in the middle of the new Netflix movie Leave the World Behind.” My wife and I are absolutely terrified.
