CM Punk returned to WWE at Survivor Series 2023 amid widespread speculation in the build-up. Punk appeared after the main event of the men’s WarGames.
WWE added to the drama, rumors and innuendo by teasing that Randy Orton will not be at Survivor Series. In a backstage segment, Sami Zayn told Jey Uso that Randy Orton wasn’t here yet, leading to loud “CM Punk” chants from the Allstate Arena. The fans cheered for Punk throughout the men’s WarGames match. Ultimately, Orton appeared to return to WWE, which was jeopardized by wrestling rumors. However, Orton received tremendous response for his long-awaited return after 18 months.
With CM Punk long gone from AEW, speculation about his return to WWE came to a head at Survivor Series in Chicago, Punk’s hometown. Fans have been analyzing every angle of CM Punk’s potential return, and the rumors are heating up thanks to a series of WWE Easter eggs.
Seth Rollins has used terms like “best in the world” and “cry me a river” in recent promos. During a Raw broadcast in September, shortly after Punk brawled with Jack Perry and Cody Rhodes He said From Jey Uso “You’re looking at someone who’s had a ton of second chances. He’s one of the best players in the world, he deserves a second chance and I think we’ve got to give him time to show us he’s changed.” Becky Lynch used Cheeky terminology Such as “Catalyst for Change”
Then there’s Shinsuke Nakamura.
Shinsuke Nakamura was WWE’s personal conduit for CM Punk’s speculation. It’s as if the promotion is using Nakamura to gauge fans’ interest in CM Punk’s return. Since Bonk Violent departure From AEW, Nakamura used the Go To Sleep (Punk’s finishing blow) in several of his matches. Although the move did not initially garner a huge response from fans, fans recently chanted “CM Punk” during Nakamura’s match against Akira Tozawa on the November 6 broadcast of Raw. Nakamura has been cutting vague promos in recent vignettes, calling out a mystery opponent. With Survivor Series kicking off in Chicago, many fans were hoping the mystery opponent would be CM Punk.
Although the stage appears to be set for CM Punk’s return, reports indicate otherwise. In the latest issue of Wrestling Newsletter (free Wrestling company), Dave Meltzer reiterated that there is no evidence of CM Punk’s return. Meltzer, a notorious waffler, went on to add that anything is possible.
“Okay guys, I’ve asked… everyone I can, in every way I know how. Nothing has changed. We’ll know one of two things when Survivor Series airs,” WWE Insider wrote. @WrestleVotes. “It was either the greatest surprise held in the history of the company or it wasn’t meant to be yet.”
WWE has created a monster by feeding off CM Punk’s return rumors with hints about WWE programming. WWE announced Randy Orton’s entry into Survivor Series early so fans in Chicago wouldn’t think WarGames’ mystery partner was CM Punk.
The buzz around CM Punk has become very prominent, as current and former WWE Superstars have found themselves answering questions about Punk’s potential return.
“I mean there are a lot of eyes right now on WWE TV,” Johnny Gargano told Battleground Podcast. Wrestling company). “Obviously every little helps. I mentioned earlier how Logan Paul took the United States Championship around the world with him and brought new attention to the product. So, I feel like at the end of the day,” he added, “whatever it is will attract more eyes on TV.” “WWE, this is the best move possible. Whatever it is, whoever they bring in, whatever eyes they bring in, I’m all for it!”
“The one thing I learned during my time in WWE is that no one knows anything,” said “Top Dolla” AJ Francis. “No one knows what happens from week to week at shows – well, let me rephrase – none of the talent knows from week to week at shows,” the former Hit Row member said. “Like every time… I mean, obviously Roman knows. Roman will know that they’ll keep Roman informed. Roman is ‘the man’, and he’s the reason the company is doing so well right now. He knows it, but 99% of the crew doesn’t know.” What are they going to do next week, let alone Survivor Series.”
Punk has been a trending topic on Twitter all week, and WWE had all the evidence they needed to confirm that Punk is still a star to a large segment of its audience. Finally, rumors seem to point to CM Punk returning to Chicago.
Punk is back after the main event of WarGames and all seems well in the world of wrestling.
