The Ministry of National Education has responded to concerns about English teaching by issuing an explanatory note. The response comes after a period of uncertainty for teachers at the start of the school year, when they had to improvise due to inadequate guides, plans and textbooks.
A New English Project
According to the ministry, the decision was taken to implement the transition plans planned for 2023 and 2024. Also, directives were mentioned regarding the effective initiation of English teaching at the secondary level from the current school term. , i.e. for the year 2023-2024.
The deployment of the new middle school English program will take place over three years, closely following the schedule established in the 2022-2026 Roadmap. This initiative is part of the procedures established in 2023 and 2024. Beginning this academic year 2023-2024, the first steps will be taken in the first year of secondary education, using specially designed educational resources. “Bridge to College Education” program. The program was developed in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and will affect 10% of secondary schools.
For the second year of college, starting this school year, the program will be based on content currently approved for the third year of college, thus covering approximately 50% of the curriculum. The existing scheme will be maintained for the third year.
Assessment of English skills will be monitored at all levels of the college, with two periodic assessments per semester and a summative assessment at the end of each school term.
Teacher training
Middle school English teachers also have the opportunity to participate in regional and local training sessions. These sessions will be integrated into continuing education programs at the regional level. They will talk about the latest educational developments linked to the implementation of the English program and will be guided by academic researchers.
As part of the “Bridge to College Education” collaboration programme, the Ministry is committed to collaborating with educational resource development workshops aimed at mainstreaming English teaching at the college level. An electronic version of these resources will be available on the Ministry’s official website, allowing all academic actors in the field to consult and share them, thus promoting a collaborative approach.
The note states that directors of regional education and training academies that are not included in the pilot should ensure that these educational resources are reproduced and made available to researchers and teachers for teaching English language in the first year of college. .
