Sepp Kuss is about to become the first American winner of the Spanish Vuelta in a decade

GUADARRAMA, Spain — Seb Coss is set to become the first American man to win one of cycling’s grand tours in a decade after he maintained his lead in the Spanish Vuelta on the final competitive day of racing on Saturday.

Kos maintained a 17-second lead over Jumbo-Visma teammate Jonas Wingegaard throughout the 20th and penultimate stage.

He will wear the leader’s red jersey heading into Sunday’s final stage, when cycling custom dictates that title rivals respect the leader’s advantage in a largely ceremonial arrival in Madrid.

The last American man to win one of the three-week cycling races, which in addition to the Vuelta and the Tour de France include the Giro d’Italia, was 2013 Vuelta winner Chris Horner.

Wout Poels won Saturday’s 129-mile trip from Manzanares El Real to Guadarrama.

Koss crossed the finish line flanked by Finjeard and teammate Primoz Roglic, with the three exchanging handshakes and patting each other on the back as they traversed the final metres.

Jumbo-Visma came into the race that started last month as the team to beat.

Not only is the Dutch team set to monopolize the podium in Madrid with Kos, Wenggaard and Roglic aiming for a 1-2-3 finish, but Jumbo-Visma is also on the cusp of sweeping all three Grand Tours this year after Roglic won the race. The Giro d’Italia repeated in May and Vingeard as Tour champion in July.
