Bradley Cooper portrays legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein opposite Carey Mulligan as actress and activist Felicia Montealegre Cohen-Bernstein in the first trailer for the Netflix movie Musical band leader.
Cooper directed and co-wrote the film, which hits select theaters November 22 before debuting December 20. Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Sarah Silverman, Michael Urey, Josh Hamilton, Scott Ellis, Gideon Glick, Sam Nivola, Alexa Swinton and Miriam Shore round out the cast for the film which counts Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg as producers.
The trailer introduces a married couple in their younger years, as they sit back to back and play an obvious game in which Bernstein (Cooper) has to guess the number chosen by Montealegre Cohn Bernstein (Mulligan). After a number of wrong choices, Bernstein asks, “So how long do we have to do this?” This leads Montealegre Cohn-Bernstein to reply briskly, “Oh, we need to build a very strong relationship.”
After glimpses of their life together, the footage ends with the pair apparently sharing the same game. This time, they’re much older, and Bernstein – who’s known for composing music for it West Side Story And the result On the waterfrontamong other acts – is the one who chose the number.
