Kyle Shanahan: It was just the “logic” to rule out Jimmy Garoppolo returning after last season

Shortly after the 49ers lost to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game, coach Kyle Shanahan was matter-of-fact when asked if he envisioned a scenario where Jimmy Garoppolo could come back.

Shanahan replied on February 1: “No.” You don’t see any scenario So.”

“Maybe someone texted me,” Garoppolo said before a joint practice between his new team, the Raiders, and his old team about Shanahan’s blunt answer. It seems as though Garoppolo has disturbed him at least a little.

“I mean, we are all humanGaroppolo told Mike Silver of San Francisco Chronicle. “You hear it, things like that. I’m just trying to make the best of the situation. We’ve all been through tough things. In life, things are going to happen that don’t go your way, and you just have to make the best of them.”

Garoppolo went on to sign with the Raiders in free agency as the 49ers officially handed the starting job to Brock Purdy

On Thursday, Shanahan clarified his postseason comment about Garoppolo’s future in San Francisco.

“I suspect Jimmy was incredible said Shanahan, via NBCSportsBayArea.com’s Jennifer Lee Chan. “He’s won a lot of games. I think that was a simple question. Is there a scenario where he’s back here next year, and I gave a logical answer: ‘No'” I think that was a bit too much, when trying to shoot him or something last. We knew he wasn’t coming back from his or our point of view, financially and all.

“I think he’s been the best quarterback here in about 20 years since Steve Young. He’s got an incredible record and every time he played and kept him healthy we were in the NFC Super Bowl.”

Garoppolo went 38-17 in the regular season in six years with 49 batters, throwing 13,599 and 82 touchdowns. He led them to two NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl as the starting quarterback, but he didn’t return in time to help them lose last season’s NFC Championship game to the Eagles.
