Brian Harman holds 5 shots while Jon Rahm set a career record for Liverpool

Brian Harman holds 5 shots while Jon Rahm set a career record for Liverpool

Everyone was trying to catch Brian Harman on move-in day.

John Ram sure did his best.

Ram came out on Saturday morning at the British Open to try and put pressure on Harman, who flew out to a huge five-shot lead after his 6-under performance on Friday at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England. Ram had a bogey-free 8-under 63 on Saturday, which lifted him up to 37 places on the leaderboard and put him back in contention. He also set the championship track record at Royal Liverpool.

Although Rahm’s run was impressive, it wasn’t enough to catch Harman – who was just starting his day with Tommy Fleetwood when Rahm entered the club.

Harman, despite making two bogeys in his four open holes, bowled a 2-under 69 on Saturday to preserve his five-shot lead. He briefly led by a 6-putt, but Cameron Young made a birdie save from a bunker in the end to reach 7-under-the-week.

Harman has only won twice in his career on the PGA Tour, most recently at the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship. He’s never won a major, though he did finish T2 at the US Open in 2017 and T6 at last year’s British Open in St. Andrews.

According to Shane Ryan of Golf DigestOnly 12 players have achieved a 36-hole lead from exactly five shots in a 72-hole major championship in history. Of those 12 golfers, 10 have won — most recently with Scotty Scheffler at the Masters last year. The only two players he has bettered are Bobby Clampett at the 1982 British Open, and Henry Cooper at the Masters in 1936. Harman also holds the largest 36-hole lead of any player in the 13 times he played in the British Open at Royal Liverpool.

Victor Hovland, Antoine Rosner, Jason Day, Sepp Straka, Tommy Fleetwood are all fourth with five less than a week. Alex Fitzpatrick and Shubhankar Sharma hit hard 4-under.

Harman’s win was by no means achieved. There is still a full day of golf. But if the Ram’s ride is any indication of what’s to come, Harman can’t slow down.
