You might only get a fraction of a second look at the Galaxy Z Flip 5 in Samsung’s latest teaser for both the device and its July 26 Unpacked event, but it shows that the waterdrop hinge does exactly what it should be as there are no gaps with the clamshell closed. And after several Twitter comments from the mentors debating whether or not there was a gap, it’s back to the old adage “only the hairdresser knows for sure.” This means, of course, that the ultimate answer rests with Samsung.
Given that Samsung produced the teaser we included in this article and that the Twitter account containing the tweet is owned by the company, we’re confident you can say goodbye to this ugly gap. But that’s not the only change we’re looking forward to with the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Perhaps the most exciting change is the larger Cover Display, which will look like a folder but measure 3.4 inches instead of the 1.9-inch outer screens seen on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 4.
There is one word of warning. Although it was speculated that Samsung and Google were optimizing some core Google apps for the larger Cover Display, leaked images have revealed that the external display will run widgets, one displaying the weather, while another displaying the time and battery life, as well as another menu for call history. There will be other widgets available for the external display and we’re not sure if any apps will run on it at all.

This doesn’t compare favorably to the external 3.6-inch Quick View display on the Razr+. This screen displays different apps such as Google Maps, YouTube, Messages, and more allowing users to handle various tasks without having to unlock the device. Hopefully, for Galaxy Z Flip 5 users, the Cover Display apps will either be available at launch or will be added shortly after the phone’s launch.
Samsung will present the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and its bigger brother (Galaxy Z Fold 5) during the upcoming Samsung Unpacked event on July 26. Expected to share the stage with foldable devices are the Galaxy Watch 6 series and Galaxy Tab S9 line. This includes the 14.6-inch Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra. The festivities start at 7 AM EST and 4 AM PT and will begin at 8 PM in Seoul where it will take place.
You can watch the live broadcast at
Samsung YouTube channel. You may want to pre-order the Galaxy Z Flip 5 now. Not only will you save $50, but the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 were the best-selling foldable devices in 2021 and 2022, respectively. And that was with an external screen of 1.9 inches. We could see more demand this year with the Cover’s larger 3.4-inch screen.
