Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has decided that the teaching of English in Moroccan colleges will be gradually generalized. This is from the next academic year. A move that Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has taken to signal, however, is less so.
A new road map
The teaching of English will henceforth be generalized in the colleges of the Serifian Kingdom. This was pointed out by the Moroccan Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports. In a circular sent to various officials in his department, Saqib Benmousa rejected a new road map at the behest of King Mohammed VI.
Therefore, the document publicly states that from 2023-2024, English will be taught to students at a coverage rate of 10% for the first year of college education. In the second year, the target will be raised to 50%. English language learning will be strengthened to achieve a coverage rate of 50% for the first year of college education. By the 2024-2025 academic year, the second year should have 100% coverage.
Generalized English from 2025-2026
The document continues that the teaching of English in Moroccan colleges will be generalized at all levels from the 2025-2026 school year. In detail, for each level of college, learners get 2 hours of English per week. Each teacher has an average of 24 hours per week, with 12 classes per teacher. Every teacher will benefit from an educational tool and a coaching and support system.
It is also planned to set up a Central Steering and Monitoring Committee. It is directly supervised by the Directors of AREFs (Regional Education and Training Academies) together with the Regional Commissions. Ministry plans to provide digital resources to students and teachers. Also, libraries will be set up exclusively for learning English in schools. A year ago, Algeria launched a similar program.
Debon, he starts in elementary school
The Algerian president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in fact, ordered the adoption of the English language from the primary cycle. The decision was taken “following an in-depth study carried out by experts and experts”. Later in the Council of Ministers, the President instructed to “review the text of the law governing the teaching profession, in the implementation of its obligations in reforming the education system”.
President Debon emphasized the “need to revise educational programs by referring to the teaching spirit that allowed the formation of an elite in various specialties after independence”. The Algerian president stressed the need to work “to start a review according to well-defined objectives, based on the results of education, while setting a timetable of at least two or three years to carry out this amendment”. .
