Titanic Film director James Cameron on Thursday spoke about the loss of the submarine Titan, which dived to explore the historic shipwreck.
“I was struck by the similarity between the Titanic disaster itself,” he told ABC News In an exclusive interview, “Where the captain was repeatedly warned of the ice in front of his ship and yet he steamed at full speed in an ice field.” Watch his interview below.
The Academy Award winner and longtime ocean diving enthusiast, who has conducted nearly thirty dives of the Titanic wreck, was commenting on today’s news from the Coast Guard that “a debris field has been discovered within the search area by a ROV near the Titanic” and that it is feared that all lives are lost. The five on board had died after a “catastrophic explosion”.

Cameron also addressed concerns that experts had expressed about the safety of the 21-foot Titan.
“As a submarine designer, I designed and built us to go into the deepest place in the ocean three times deeper than the Titanic. So I understand the engineering problems associated with building this type of craft and all the safety protocols that you have to go through. And I think [it] is critical to getting the message home from our efforts here [that] Deep diving is a mature art. Since the early 1960s, where there have been a few accidents, no one has been killed in deep immersion yet. [That’s] Most of the time between Kitty Hawk and the first flight of the 747.”

Cameron also told ABC News that “I actually thought I’d spent more time on it [Titanic] What the captain did that day.
The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912 after hitting an iceberg, killing around 1,500 passengers and crew. The wreck was found in 1985, and inspired diving enthusiast Cameron to make it Titanic. The film went on to win 11 Academy Awards and gross over $2.26 billion worldwide. It remains among the top 10 best films of all time both domestically and internationally, ranking fourth on the latter list.

“I have made Titanic Because I wanted to dive into the wreck, not because I particularly wanted to make the movie,” Cameron said Tell play boy in 2009. “Titanic was the pinnacle of shipwrecks on Mount Everest, and as a diver I wanted to get it right. When I learned some other guys had dived the Titanic to make an Imax movie, I said, ‘I’m going to make a Hollywood movie to pay for an expedition And he did the same. “I loved the first taste, and I wanted more.”
