Michigan State quarterback Payton Thornethe Spartans’ starter for the past two years, and a wide receiver Keon ColemanWho led the team in the main receiving categories, got into the transfer portal.
Thorne threw for 6,494 yards, 49 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in his career at Michigan State. In the 2021 season, his first, Thorn showed a lot of promise, throwing for 3,233 yards and 27 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.
He played through injuries in 2022 and threw for 2,679 yards and 19 touchdowns with 11 interceptions as Michigan State went 5-7 overall, including losses to Ohio StateAnd Michigan And Pennsylvania state.
Thorne will be entering as a graduate transfer and will be a graduating senior in 2023.
Coleman led the Spartans in receptions (58), receiving yards (798) and receiving touchdowns (7) last season.
Despite being the starter the past two seasons, Thorne has been in a battle for first place this offseason with the Noah Kim, a redshirt freshman from Virginia. Kim was primarily a backup, but with a lack of consistency on offense during the 2022 season, head coach Mel Tucker was looking for someone to take over first.
Michigan State still has Kim on the list, as well as a redshirt freshman Katyn Houserand is a four-star prospect in the class of 2022.
Since Thorne is a graduate transfer, he will be immediately eligible at his next destination. However, the transfer has been delayed, as Sunday is the last day for non-graduate transfers to enter the gate before the window closes.
He’ll have competition for another landing spot, too Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson And Bordeaux quarterback Brady Allen I recently entered the portal.
