Rupert Grint talks about his choice not to attend fellow Harry Potter Robbie Coltrane’s funeral after Hagrid’s heartbreaking death last year
Rupert Grint has explained why he did not attend the funeral of his Harry Potter co-star Robbie Coltrane.
Actor Robbie was best known for playing the role of half-giant, half-human Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid in the film franchise before his death due to multiple organ failure, in October last year.
And while Robert, 34, who played Ron Weasley in the movies, says he looked up to Robbie, he chose not to go to his funeral last year.
Speaking out: Rupert Grint, 34, explained why he didn’t attend fellow Harry Potter Robbie Coltrane’s funeral
Robert explained from his fellow top stars GQ: “They all had this kind of unconscious presence in my life…
Robbie, losing him was particularly hard. It really was the coolest being.
However, he did not go to his funeral, explaining his choice: “I don’t pretend to know him outside of work.”

After Robbie passed away last year, Robert took to Instagram to share some heartfelt words about the star.
He described him as: “a man with a giant heart who was still looking out for us decades later.”
He also discussed the death of actor Richard Harris, who played Headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the first two films, admitting that it was difficult to think of him being 13 years old.
Playing the Role: Robbie is best known for playing the half-giant, half-human Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid in the film franchise.
Goodbye: He also discussed the death of actor Richard Harris, who played headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the first two films, admitting it was hard to think of as a 13-year-old (cast in the role in 2001)
Robert also revealed that Richard’s death in 2002 at the age of 72 after a battle with cancer, was his first ever loss.
I was 13, in a hotel promoting the second movie, when I was told. It was hard to think of.
Richard was later replaced in the role by Michael Gambon, now 82.
It comes after Robert threw his support for the Harry Potter TV series amid rumors that studio heads are already considering adapting the franchise.
The actor, who played magician Ron Weasley’s friend in all eight films, said he thinks it “does really well.”
“I would love to see Harry Potter made into a TV show,” he said. I think it will really work. I’m sure the movies will be remade, anyway.
Sad: Revealed that Richard’s death, in 2002 at the age of 72 after a battle with cancer, was the first loss he had ever suffered (Robert was seen in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001)
