Mikaela Shiffrin adds her 84 World Cup wins to the record

San Vigilio Di Maribi, Italy – Michaela Schiffrin She didn’t wait long to add to her record number of World Cup victories.

A day after notching her record-breaking 83rd win, Shiffrin added her 84th win on Wednesday in another giant slalom at the same course.

And just as she had done the day before, Shiffrin led from start to finish, dominating the first round on the steep Erta course and then adding to her advantage in the second round.

Shiffrin finished 0.82 seconds ahead of two-time Olympic silver medalist Ragnhild Moenkel and 1.19 ahead of Olympic champion Sarah Hector.

When Shiffrin reaches the finish line after her second run, she collapses on the ice in apparent exhaustion—her skates still attached to her shoes—before Mawinkle and Hector come to congratulate her and help her up.

“Oh, my God,” Shiffrin said. “I was pushing hard, and just hoping to end up on the right side out of all the gates. Now I’m a bit mentally dead — just so tired. But when you skate like that, it keeps your energy going, so, just an incredible feeling.”

Tuesday’s win puts Shiffrin ahead of the women’s record of 82 wins set by her former US teammate Lindsey Vonnand Wednesday’s victory brought her close to the record total — in men’s or women’s competition — of 86 wins by Ingmar Stenmark.

Vonn retired four years ago when injuries cut short her career, and she raced Stenmark in the 1970s and 1980s.

If Shiffrin wins two races in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic, this weekend, she can take on Stenmark on Sunday.

“Technically, it’s possible,” Schifrin said with a laugh. “We’ll see if I can put the energy into my slalom skis for a couple more races.

She added, “It’s been busy, and I’m at an unfortunate time in my period, so I’m more tired now. We used to talk about it.”

Spindleruv was where Shiffrin made her finals debut as a 15-year-old prodigy nearly 12 years ago.

“It’s a special place for me,” she said. “So I’m really looking forward to going.”

Former World Cup giant slalom champion Marta Pacino was well on her way to the podium before losing control a few gates from the end and coming through the gate that slammed her into the podium.

It was Shiffrin’s 10th win of the season and her 19th giant slalom victory, bringing her close to Vrene Schneider’s record of 20th in the discipline.

Shiffrin said she had a late night out after her record-breaking day.

“But it was a really lovely evening,” she said. “It was great to see the messages from people and a lot of support and excitement about the race. I was definitely looking a lot for all that and then trying to go to bed and get a good sleep. And I was up. In the middle of the night. I was up at three. Then I was up at five. I was hungry. All night. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m such a mess.'”

However, Shiffrin managed to pull herself together to bring out her best skating again.

“After, after [Tuesday]“I was very tired, which made the day very difficult,” she said. “And I was nervous because when I get tired on the ice, I make mistakes. And I don’t want to make a mistake today.

“In the first round, I thought, ‘Either I’m out at the fourth gate or it’s going to be a really good round. It ended up being a really good run. In the second round, I was just trying to trust the skate and keep pushing, no matter how it felt.”
