(Pocket-lint) – A winter-themed Minecraft world will help kids learn English as part of a collaboration between Microsoft and Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
The new world, called Gormi’s Winter Wonderland, is designed by Microsoft to help children aged eight and above learn English by solving puzzles and completing game tasks. According to a press release, these tasks are suitable for beginners with real-life communication skills and Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level A1 and above.
“We want to create an English learning experience, and Minecraft has been a great platform loved by millions of children around the world,” Cambridge product manager Alex Martin said in a statement. “To improve their English by learning and using relevant real-life language and communication skills.”
Martin goes on to say that children are encouraged to work out the meaning of the words they encounter in play, and then use that knowledge to move forward. “It’s a really fun experience that I’m sure will resonate with kids and parents everywhere,” she adds.
This is not the first time the Cambridge team has worked on this type of project. The same team has developed some of the world’s leading English learning and assessment products.
