A Delta flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles had to make an emergency landing after smoke filled the cabin and passengers thought that was the end.
Delta Flight 2846 made an emergency landing in Albuquerque on Tuesday after mysterious smoke filled the passenger compartment and cockpit.
Video filmed on the plane shows the cabin filled with smoke from the front end, and passenger and podcast official Gary Vaughn said he could only see “a few rows” in front of him.
“I knew something catastrophic had happened,” he said on his podcast.
Everyone was crying, everyone was screaming, and everyone thought the engines had stopped working. And you can hear that we were just kind of slipping…we were still pretty steady. There was no disturbance, there was nothing.
The pilot told the 193 passengers on board that they had “lost oil pressure in the correct engine” and that the engine had “lost all its power,” Vaughn said.
Throughout the entire process, Vaughn said the four flight attendants were up and distributing water to the passengers.
The pilot was in complete control of the aircraft. ‘I don’t think he lost control of the plane,’ said Vaughn.
“Shouting and crying, people definitely thought this was the end,” he said. It was horrific at best. When you watch movies and you see all the frantic crying and screaming and you hear these kinds of things, that’s exactly what happened.
A dead pilot on the flight reportedly told Vaughn that the smoke was from the engine because it had no oil.
Delta Flight 2846 made an emergency landing in Albuquerque on Tuesday after mysterious smoke filled both the passenger compartment and cockpit.
Passenger video shows the frightening scene as smoke trickles towards the rear of the plane, noticeably heavier towards the front as the alarm goes off.
Fellow passenger Mason Weiner said on Twitter that the smoke came from “burning oil” in the engine. Another passenger, who went by Queen Rainey Reigns on Facebook, claimed that the cabin crew had told passengers that there was no engine oil and that the plane was ‘decreasing in altitude’.
Delta has not released an official reason for the smoke. DailyMail.com has been reached for comment.
The pilots were able to land safely at Albuquerque International Airport, according to Federal Aviation Administration public affairs specialist Donnell Evans.
Passengers Gary Vaughn (left) and Queen Raines (right) were both on the flight. Vaughn described the moment as being in a movie, saying, “When I watch disaster movies now, I’m absolutely terrified.” Rene agreed, saying she was “terrified” and said to herself, “Oh my God, am I going to do that?”
Another passenger, Mason Weiner, said the pilots landed the plane “smoothly” and were “amazing.”
“The crew were amazing and made everything as smooth as possible while making an emergency landing in #Albuquerque,” Weiner wrote.
Various videos posted online by passengers show a strange-looking cabin filled with light smoke, with a noticeably heavier plume toward the front of the plane.
As the passengers sat quietly, the emergency alarm rang steadily.
As the plane landed on the runway, a member of the cabin crew can be heard in Vaughan’s video telling passengers to “keep your seat belts fastened” while firefighters check the plane before it can reach the gate.
Rainey also said the plane started smoking when it was over Texas.
‘It’s been a day,’ said Renee. ‘So we are [were] we fly [were] It was in the air on the plane over Texas and smoke started from the inside of our plane. The fire alarm was ringing, like it was whistling like a house whistle when there’s a lot of smoke… It was going off.
“The plane is smoking from the inside,” Renee, who was dozing on the flight, said on her Facebook Story. “What can you do 36,000 feet in the air on a plane that smokes? You just sit there and pray for the best. That’s the fulfillment of it all.”
You just have to talk your way and confirm your way through it, which is what I had to do.

“It was an experience,” she said. I was afraid, I was terrified. It was the second most dangerous thing that happened in my life… It was a moment: Oh my God, am I going to do that? ”
The plane landed safely and journalist Mark Johnson posted a video of the pilots thanking them for their flight to Albuquerque.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident and 193 passengers have been redirected to Los Angeles Airport on a subsequent flight.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and crew,” Delta Airlines told DailyMail.com in a statement.
Delta maintenance specialists are looking into aircraft failure.
“Delta has done a great job,” Vaughn said. “I think their cabin crew was great, they kept everyone calm.”
Vaughn said Delta offered them $150 in airline credit, but he doesn’t think that’s enough after the experience they’ve had.
“When I watch disaster movies now, I’m totally terrified,” he said. ‘It was crazy.’
