Josh Donaldson moves to a home trot, only to be sent off in the opening game for the Yankees.

“I thought for sure it was a home run,” said teammate Anthony Rizzo.

Veteran Donaldson had already gotten into a home trot, having slapped his hand with first base coach Travis Chapman, when he slammed on the brake between first and second.

Seeing the ball passed to Amed Rosario, Donaldson tried to defeat her to first base, but was disqualified.

The play was backed up in a video review, making it a game draw.

“Maybe Donaldson stripped his eye for a second,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Every now and then, you have to say something. I haven’t said anything yet.”

Moments later, Isiah Kiner-Falefa grabbed third base after Gonzalez misjudged his singles streak to the right and scored a fly-in-the-sack goal for Jose Trevino to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

“I’m glad it didn’t hurt us,” Boone said.

The Yankees won the game 4-1.
