Las vigas – They wrapped up their first weekend in NBA 2K23 Summer League. Here are the highlights of Sunday’s summer league games:
McClung, Warriors
Hey, this is the NBA free agent season, plus all the summer action at gyms on the UNLV campus. So it was fitting that McClung rips it up for Golden State right before the Los Angeles Lakers played on the same field.
Just days before that, McClung, a 6-foot-2, two-point guard with two games of NBA experience, played for the Lakers at the California Classic event in San Francisco. But he had to come off the bench behind other prospects and aspiring guards, so the 23-year-old Georgetown and Texas Tech producer turned for a bigger chance for the Warriors in Las Vegas.
All McClung did was score 22 points in a 9-for-15 shootout against San Antonio, with five rebounds, six assists, a steal and a crack shot. He fired two of his highest-grossing crowd moments with standout plays, including a super-fast behind-the-back pass for a fast bucketload. Players and fans dazzled with his energy in last season’s G League Rookie of the Year, hopping around and jumping on the floor.
Jonathan Kuminga, Warriors
After debuting on Friday (four points, 2 for 10 shot), Golden State’s Year Two of the G League Elite lineup played a point forward this time in Pippen-esque style. He scored 28 points with seven boards and four assists, sinking 10 of 22 field attempts. He had five turnovers – a couple of bad decisions trying to force the ball to pass to James Wiseman – but he showed both the size and skill that made the Warriors hold him for seventh in the 2021 draft.
Keegan Murray, Kings
Murray has shown a silky 3-point shot so far and hasn’t been shy about firing it against Indiana, taking 12 and making four. But his basketball cleverness was also evident, when he factored in – Murray’s slash along the left baseline in the last minute and a fall into a slick Frankie Ferrari hit shocked Sacramento’s lead to 100-96, and offending Murray drew another point onto the ice in the game. The 6-foot-8 winger finished with 23 points before losing and was plus 19 in winning by seven.
Cam Thomas, nets
Thomas, the 6-foot-4 Brooklyn guard, who was born in Japan but was polished as a flyer at Oak Hill Academy and LSU, scored 26 points in his win over Philadelphia. Thomas and his backcourt teammate David Duke Jr. (21 points) combined for 24 points in the second half, the only two players to have doubled their numbers over the last two quarters. Thomas reached the foul streak for 15 free throws and hit them all.
Vernon Curry Jr., Wizards
Curry, a 6-foot-9, 270-pound problematic, was a double trouble against entering Phoenix. The big guy scored 15 points, earning a 7-for-7 mark from the goal line as he hit the sun on the glass for 11 rebounds. Washington’s other big player, 6-foot-11 Jaime Echnik, helped make life difficult for the Suns with 12 points and six rebounds, as the Wizards dominated the trophy 42-34.
Quentin Grimes, Knicks
Not only was his score total (24), it was Grimes’ efficiency. The New York marksman used only 14 field goal attempts and was ranked 4 out of 9 from outside the arc and 6 to 6 from the line. His teammate Jericho Sims had 11 points and 10 plates while the Knicks were playing with the Bulls.
T. Shawn Alexander, Hornets
A right ankle sprain interrupted Alexander’s night in Charlotte’s opener on Friday. But the 6-foot-3 goalkeeper, who spent the 2020-21 season on a two-contract with Phoenix, ditched any after-effects to score 22 points with six assists and an accuracy of 4 out of 9 nearly 3-points. 30 minutes Sunday. However, he was left to fellow GT Thor in a 4 for 13 shootout night to hit a Sudden Death Index 3 that beat the Lakers in double overtime. That was good for Charlotte’s first victory in Vegas since July 5, 2019.
