Google Tasks replaces Assistant’s Reminders in Calendar

At the beginning of this month, Google Assistant appeared to be loss of ability Sets both location-based and custom reminders. It looks like a bigger change is in the works as the old Assistant reminder system in Google Calendar is being replaced by Google Tasks.

Google Reminders has long been integrated into many first-party services. There is of course the Google Assistant and how it can be accessed on the web from Assistant.google.com/reminders, as well as the Google App, Keep, and Calendar. However, despite the prominent placement, the experience is a bit outdated the way it visually arrives on Android and feels pretty worn out.

Google Calendar 2022.24.0.x – which has not yet been widely released – reveals that “Reminders are now tasks”.

Use Google Tasks to get notifications about your tasks and keep track of them wherever you are in Google Workspace.

Calendar clients for Android and iOS (not on the web) allow you to create a reminder or task from a FAB (floating action button). In the calendar view, the latter is marked with the round check mark logo, while the former uses a string attached to a finger.

Google Tasks is a workspace solution to create and Task Management With deep integration with Gmail (drag to create on the web) and sidebar availability across other apps. Maybe used before Free usersbut most consumers turn to Reminders in light of first-party integrations, especially with Assistant.

Meanwhile, Google Calendar will noticeably say that “all your reminders are still available in Google Keep.” This in itself is a bit strange considering that Keep only shows reminders that are set for notes, not the entire to-do list.

9to5Google’s Take

Despite the limitations introduced today, which refer to the changes as “remers_migration”, there are many unknowns about how everything is implemented. At least, it looks like you will no longer be able to create a reminder from the calendar, thus leaving the Google Tasks integration as the only service available.

However, it is not clear if existing reminders will be converted into tasks, or if they will be completely removed from the calendar. The continued use of reminders in Google Keep is somewhat odd, even though the note-taking app is more consumer-oriented.

Finally, it’s unclear when all of this will happen since sideloading the new version of the calendar today doesn’t trigger migration prompts.

More broadly, it’s clear that changes are underway to Google Reminders. We previously worked on a file Memory feature In the Google app and this could be the intended replacement once the dust has settled.
