The 2022 Open – or the British Open, as the Americans call it – is underway in St Andrews, the home of golf. This year’s tournament, the main men’s final of the year, promises to be fast-paced and wide open. there favorite one (Rory McIlroy) and a host of competitors (Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, and others) but no consensus.
The 150th Open Championship is cause for celebration, and returning to St Andrews for the first time in seven years marks an important chapter in golf history. This might be the last time Tiger Woods plays at St Andrews, and it might be McIlroy’s best chance of winning on the golf course. Perhaps a young golf star will join the ranks of the game’s immortals, perhaps a new and unexpected person will rise to the challenge and bring the Claret Jug home.
The conditions for Thursday’s first round are strict and fast, meaning players will face challenges from the smooth greens and fairways that stretch across Scotland. Early results suggest there are finches going into The Open on Thursday; The question is who will benefit from it and who will regret letting this opportunity pass it by? It is a challenge like no other in golf.
