“We must pay tribute to him.”, breathes Stephanie Brisett-Lewell, an English teacher at La Croix des Sarrasin College in Oxon. This Friday, September 9, the 4th graders had a somewhat special English lesson. In the program: 50-minute discussions with their teacher about the Queen’s life, her reign and the future coronation of her son Charles. And the teacher, all dressed in black, immediately sets the tone: Queen’s picture Displayed at the entrance of the room.
Lots of questions from students
The course begins with a quiz. “How old was Elizabeth II when she died?” Axel, 14, stamped his feet on his chair and raised his hand: “96 years!” Stéphanie Braizat-Leval reflects on the queen’s youth at the time of her coronation and the years she spent on the throne. This is followed by a short documentary screening royal family
The course ends with a discussion in French to answer all the students’ questions. “What was she really doing with her life Queen?”, asks Leonardo. His teacher, amused, replied: “She was an icon and she represented the United Kingdom in all of these movements and in everything she did.” The young man seems surprised. “At least she’s the one who appoints the Prime Minister?” Another disappointment for the teenager. “No, neither the queen nor her heir has that authority.”
4:00 pm: It’s the end of class and many fingers are still up. “We will continue with courses dedicated to the Queen throughout the next week and up until the funeral.”says the teacher.
