New Postage Weight Breaks to Negatively Impact Some However Could Benefit Others

30 May 2012

It's now official. A letter from Australia Post dated 28th May and linked to this article has confirmed that Print Post price increases will be enforced on 2nd July 2012.

Forums held in Sydney and Melbourne in 2011 initiated and underwritten by national Mailing House D&D Mailing afforded publishers and other mail users utilising the Print Post service the opportunity to express their views and concerns directly to Australia Post executives. Whilst these were taken on board by Australia Post the result of the weighted average increase of 3.8 per cent was according to them unavoidable due to " increasing external costs , particularly around delivery, transport and energy costs" The letter explains reasons and the various sectors of cost that will impact on the industry at a time when advertising, subscription and news stand revenues have declined in a majority of cases.

To counter this decision and support the industry D&D Mailing have launched a mail audit division, announced in last week's Publishing Edge. According to DDMA's manager Iqbal Akhtar, "Response to this mailing audit entity have been overwhelming indicating the breadth of concern for this cost impact on an industry in stress. In some instances we have identified upwards to 5 per cent increases, not 3.8 per cent whilst we have also been able to assist reduce costs in some circumstances through a change in process".

Iqbal Akhtar from DDMA can be contacted  in Sydney on 02 9725 2114 or David Docherty in Melbourne 03 9790 5844 or by email
