Quarterly Audit Figures Provide Glimmer of Optimism

19 Nov 2009

The magazine industry continues to feel the impact of a fragile economy however some titles are bucking the trend.

In a commentary put out by NDD Distribution, the latest Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) Quarterly figures show that although most titles sold fewer copies than the same period last year, it is encouraging that 6 of the audited titles gained on the previous (June) quarter. September 2009 circulation numbers are less onerous than September 2008 dropping by only 1.63 per cent TCS compared to an 8.55 per cent respectively. Compared to the June 2009 quarter, RSV is up by 0.56 per cent and TCS is down only 0.14 per cent; showing signs of an industry climbing back.

Bucking the trend is Pacific Magazines title, Famous, which has recorded a 35.04 per cent jump in year-on-year circulation even though the overall weekly magazine market declined by 2.06 per cent.

According to the ABC figures, the total circulation figure for the weekly magazine market was down from 2.478 million in the quarter ending September 2008 to 2.427 million in the quarter ending September 2009.
